Jaguar Brand Check-up: The Rebrand That Came Before the Car

On November 19, Jaguar replaced its identity with a 30-second film that showed no car. On December 2, in Miami, it showed one: the Type 00 concept. Neither can be bought. New Jaguar sales have ended in the U.K., and the brand’s yearly retail sales are down about 63% from five years earlier. We look at what the reset is meant to fix, and what it cannot fix yet.

Key takeaways

  • Jaguar’s retail sales fell from 180,198 in the year to March 2019 to about 66,900 in the year to March 2024, so the brand was shrinking well before the rebrand.
  • The Copy Nothing film of November 19 drew 1.5 million YouTube views in four days and a mostly hostile response, with critics asking where the car was.
  • With new sales ended in the U.K. and the first new model not on sale there until 2026, Jaguar has a gap of more than a year between its promise and its product.
  • Tata Motors, of which JLR is part, closed at INR 801.25 on December 3, about 31% below its July 30 close, but that price reflects the whole group, not Jaguar alone.

What Jaguar launched

On November 19, Jaguar posted a 30-second film called Copy Nothing. Its caption reads: “We’re here to delete ordinary. To go bold. To copy nothing.” The film shows models in brightly coloured outfits. It does not show a car. The new identity retires the roaring cat badge, introduces a wordmark with a capital G in the middle, and names the design approach Exuberant Modernism. Managing director Rawdon Glover said, as quoted by Top Gear: “To bring back such a globally renowned brand we had to be fearless.” He added: “This is a complete reset.”

The response was fast and mostly negative. The Associated Press reported that people complained about the lack of a car and the confusing message, and that X owner Elon Musk posted: “Do you sell cars?” Four days after release, the film had 1.5 million views and over 24,000 comments on YouTube, according to a Forbes contributor, who wrote that the slogan “go woke, go broke” appeared often in the reaction and ended up calling the rebrand genius.

The numbers behind the reset

Jaguar was shrinking long before the logo changed. JLR reported 180,198 Jaguar retail sales in the year to March 2019, about 31% of the group total. In the year to March 2024, Jaguar retail sales were about 66,900 out of 431,700, roughly 15%. That is a fall of about 63% in five years. That year, JLR revenue rose 27.1% to £29.0 billion, with Range Rover and Defender making up most of its retail sales.

Production of the XE, XF and F-Type ended in mid-2024. In the July to September quarter, Jaguar wholesales were about 6,000, against 13,500 a year earlier, while Range Rover and Defender made up about 84% of JLR wholesales. From November, new Jaguar sales in the U.K. came to an end. The first new model will not go on sale there until 2026.

Diagnosis: a positioning problem older than the logo

This summer, JLR chief executive Adrian Mardell told investors: “We are not in mass premium. We tried to get into mass premium, that didn’t work too well.” Top Gear reported he confirmed five products would be “eliminated”, quoting the descriptions “lower value” and “close to zero profitability”. The new plan moves Jaguar up. Its first new car is a four-door electric GT expected to start above £100,000. Choosing a smaller, wealthier audience is a sound brand positioning decision.

The trouble is sequencing. Brand work pays when people can act on it. Jaguar drew a large audience at the moment it had the least to sell, and in its home market it has nothing new to sell for more than a year. The balance between brand building and sales activation is different for a luxury car, but a launch film with no product asks the audience to take the whole strategy on trust.

What the Type 00 answers

On December 2, at Miami Art Week, Jaguar showed the Type 00, a design concept for its new electric cars. Jaguar says its first production model, a four-door GT on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, will be revealed in late 2025 and built in the U.K., with a target range of up to 770 km (WLTP). The concept answers the first complaint: where is the car. It does not yet answer the second: who the new buyer is, and why existing owners should wait.

Tata Motors, of which JLR is part, closed at INR 801.25 on India’s National Stock Exchange on December 3, about 31% below its July 30 close of INR 1,161.85. That price reflects the whole group, not Jaguar alone.

What growing companies can learn

Launch the proof with the promise. If the product is a year away, show it first or keep the launch small. Treat a move up market as a decision about who you serve and what they will pay, which our pricing strategy guide covers, and let the identity follow. If you pause sales to rebuild, plan how you will keep owners, dealers and staff with you until the new offer arrives. A new logo can announce a change. It cannot stand in for one.
